Dr Zomboss is back in Plants vs Zombies: Heroes (PvZ Heroes) with an even more nefarious plan up his sleeves. However, he, like most people, has the irresistible need to push a big red button that is labelled “DON’T PUSH” (Caps fully intended). Eden star mods. The button self-destructed his Zombot Hero-Tron 5000, turning rare Plants and Zombies worldwide into.. wait for it.. Superheroes!
Unlike the other games in the series, PvZ Heroes is not a tower defense game but a turn-based MMOCCG. Similar to most MMOCCGs, you’ll get to build and customize your own deck of 40 cards. Depending on which hero the deck is built for, your deck will then have access to 2 out of the 5 categories of unit cards. There are also Trick cards which are played in a way that’s comparable to a normal “power card”. You’ll get to draw 4 of these normal cards, be it a unit or a Trick card, at the start of every game.
Each hero also has their own 5 superpower cards and you’ll get 1 card randomly drawn from this pile at the start of a game as well. Superpower cards cannot be drawn from your deck in the game. Instead, your hero will need to perform a Super-Block in order to get another randomly drawn superpower card. Super-Block can be earned by charging it up and to charge it, your hero will need to take some damage.
The gameplay mechanics are also uniquely different in PvZ Heroes. Instead of focusing on the speed of each unit to determine the order of action, the game simply allows units on both sides to make a move regardless of whether they are “still alive” when the move is performed, provided that everything happens within a turn. The game even forgoes the part that decides which side gets to go first in a round and has fixed it in such a way that regardless of which faction you opted for, you’ll still be given a fair chance at winning.
In addition to the game’s incredible gameplay, PvZ heroes also provides plenty of PvE, in the form of Plant and Zombie campaigns as well as quests, and PvP for you to enjoy. In PvP, there are ranked and casual matches so you could practice playing your deck first in Casual prior to heading over to Ranked. Unlike PvE where you get to earn in-game cash, you’ll win premium gems by playing PvP matches.
Premium gems will allow you to buy premium card packs that may contain a new Hero card. This is important because this is currently the only way for you to earn a new Hero aside from the free 3 heroes per faction that you’ll eventually get. You can also earn from premium gems by completing hero-based and daily quests. For normal unit and Trick cards, you can get more by buying normal card packs using in-game cash or you could also earn energy from dailies or recycling higher quality cards and use those energy points to craft the card you want.
PvZ Heroes has a graphical upgrade as compared to its predecessors and it’s nice to note that the game contains a ton of very well-drawn comic, showcasing the hilarious skirmishes between plants and zombies. The sound effects are very well-done too.
Overall, Plants vs Zombies: Heroes is most definitely a far cry (in a good way) from the other games under the franchise’s umbrella. The collectible card element fits with the series so perfectly. Couple that with some incredibly well-designed and unique gameplay and a competitive aspect, you’ll get a game that will last well beyond its hype. Sounds like a game you’d like?
